Simply put, by understanding our local environment we are able to plant species which are native to the area. This allows for a higher chance of success when planting, the plants require little attention once established, they bring a plethora of biodiversity into the backyard and surrounding areas, and provide a pleasing aesthetic that fits with the surrounding landscape. A vast quantity of the biodiversity needed for growing organic produce make habitats in the surrounding bushlands, nature reserves and corridors. By reinstating native gardens, the native inhabitants are able to find refuge and gorge on the bounty within the garden beds. As we have increased our onsite native species and allowed varied canopy's to grow, our losses to pest damage have reduced from around 20% down to 10%.

Due to the variability of the environment there are many native plants suitable for regenerating a chosen area and it is worthwhile researching if a more suitable plant is available. Understanding the planting area will be beneficial for the back pocket and the backyard, it would be unfortunate to plant a drought hardy, dry land species in a wetland or vice versa. There are vast plant and species guides available from the council, local nurseries, the EHP, State Government and a variety of other reliable sources. For this plant guide I have chosen local species which increase the local vegetative communities, provide habitat, shade, pollens and nectars, and/or are drought tolerant.
